Jay Berwanger "Heisman 1935" Signed Vintage Leather Mini Helmet With JSA COA

$1,795.00

Jay Berwanger was the winner of the first ever Heisman Trophy in 1935 and was also the first player taken in the inaugural NFL Draft in 1936. Berwanger's selection as the best college player in the land came when the Heisman was known as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy, a one-year title that was re-named in 1936. A high priced hold-out, Berwanger turned down an offer from Chicago Bears owner George Halas and entered the business world instead, having never played a down in the NFL. The offered helmet is a throwback "leatherhead" type, appropriate to Berwanger's period of play with the University of Chicago Maroons from 1933-1935. Berwanger has signed on the top leather band and he has included the inscription "Heisman 1935". Full photo LOA from JSA.
