The inimitable Bill Russell is universally regarded as the greatest champion in NBA history. Russell took home 11 NBA Finals championships as a player and two as a coach while changing the course of basketball as possibly the greatest defensive player the game will ever see. Sadly, Russell passed away in July 2022, leading to the NBA honoring his legacy by retiring his number "6" league-wide. Russell's legacy as a civil rights activist and trailblazer transcends sport, culminating in his being awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2011. Russell—selected to the NBA's 75th Anniversary team in 2022—was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
