Much to the delight of the hometown Chicago faithful, Michael Jordan edged out Dominique Wilkins to win the 1988 NBA Slam-Dunk Championship. The event had its roots in the old ABA going back to 1976 and was brought back in 1984 for that season’s All-Star Game. The 1988 event had a stacked field, which included Jordan, Wilkins, Spud Webb (the 1986 winner), Greg Anderson, Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey and Otis Smith. There was controversy as Dominque Wilkins, who was leading, was thought to have been given a lower score than deserved for his final dunk, allowing hometown hero Jordan to capture the crown in his last breathtaking foul-line slam. Offered here is a multi-signed basketball signed by six of the participants in the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk contest. This ball is a Spalding NBA model ball that has two white panels where the signatures were penned in a fine-tipped black marker. Jordan’s signature is on the bottom panel to the left with Jerome Kersey (inscribed “#25”) and Otis Smith (inscribed “#18”) on the same panel. The panel above has Clyde Drexler (inscribed “#22”), Dominque Wilkins (inscribed “#21” and Greg Anderson (inscribed “#33” and “Cadillac”). There is cracking on the white panels, but the signatures are still clean. This ball comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication. The ball does not fully inflate but displays nicely.
