After graduating from Pasadena Junior College in 1939, future Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson enrolled at UCLA, where the young Robinson became the school’s first athlete to earn varsity letters in four sports: baseball, basketball, football, and track. In track and field, he won a 1940 NCAA championship in the long jump. However, Robinson didn’t fare so well during his only baseball season with the Bruins, posting an average of .097, though in his first game he stole home twice and went 4-4. This Spalding Official League Ball is signed by 13 members of the 1940 UCLA Bruins baseball team, with the date of “4/8/40 UCLA 3 STANFORD 2" inscribed on the ball, making this a very early Robinson signature. Key signatures in blue steel-tipped fountain pen include those of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, John Moore, Billy Guyer, Max Hess, and Lynn Hale. The ball is accompanied by an LOA from JSA for the signatures.
