In 1978, the defending World Series champion New York Yankees reached the playoffs by Bucky Dent’s iconic three-run homer in the seventh inning of a one-game playoff against the Boston Red Sox to decide the winner of the American League East Division. The Yankees proceeded to beat the Kansas City Royals in a four-game ALCS, setting up a matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series for a second straight year. The Yankees won the World Series in six games, with Dent again playing the role of playoff hero by winning the World Series MVP trophy.
