Outstanding early baseball signed by the 1940 Daytona Beach Islanders.  The Class D team in the Florida State League was managed by Dickey Kerr, who took a young phenom named Stan Musial under his wing.  The young pitcher (Musial) would finish the season 18-5 with an ERA of 2.62, and, because the team roster was so small, when Musial wasn't pitching, he played the field, batting .311 with 70 RBI.  Toward the end of the season, a shoulder injury would end his pitching career, and by 1941 he was a full-time outfielder.  This attractive team-signed baseball documents that season, one of the earliest Stan Musial signatures we have ever seen.  Musial and Kerr both signed the baseball, as did pitcher Lou Klein, who would have a brief major league career as well.  The historical importance of this ball cannot be denied. Full letter JSA COA. This originated from Stan Musial's personal collection.
