As Casey Stengel put it, the 1969 New York Mets were " Amazin' ". After ninth and tenth place finishes through their first seven seasons in the ten-team National League, the '69 Mets put together a miraculous season. 1969 marked the first year of divisional play, and the Mets responded with a 100-62 season record that was the best mark in the NL East, and which would also have been good enough to top the NL West. Only a tremendously talented Baltimore Orioles squad posted a better record than the Metropolitans, and the O's were heavily favored to win the World Series. Alas for Baltimore boosters it was not to be, as the underdogs from New York rolled to a 5-game triumph in the Fall Classic. Rich in pitching talent on both sides, the 1969 World Series finished with a low composite score of 15-9 over the 5 games played.
