On February 22, 1980, the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team defeated the mighty Red USSR National Hockey Team by a score of 4-3 in the semifinal round. Sports Illustrated said of Team USA’s improbable gold medal run at the 1980 Winter Olympics “It may just be the single most indelible moment in all of U.S. sports history, one that sent the nation into a frenzy.” Almost as a vapid epilogue, the young American team then proceeded to defeat Finland to earn the gold medal after vanquishing the Soviets.
