Displayed is the opportunity to possess a Bela Lugosi signed photo, from the legendary actor who rose to fame for his stage and screen performances in the title role of Dracula. Lugosi was born as Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko in Lugos (hence his stage name of Lugosi) in Hungary in 1882. After more than 170 stage productions as an actor in Hungary, Lugosi came to the United States and eventually landed the title role in the 1927 Broadway production of Dracula, in which he was a hit. He went to Hollywood and was again the title role in the 1931 film of Dracula, winning increased fame for his performance. Lugosi's fame as Dracula and his thick Hungarian accent served to typecast him for horror films, and he was never quite able to fully break away from this typecasting. He appeared in a number of films with fellow horror legend Boris Karloff, such as The Black Cat, The Raven, and Son of Frankenstein. Lugosi's later career saw him still struggling to avoid being typecast. He passed away in 1956.
The offered black & white photo shows Lugosi in horror character, with wide eyes in a haunting stare. Using blue fountain ink, Lugosi penned "Good luck to Dear little [name is not known]/ Bela Lugosi." At the bottom of the photo is "MAS [?] - 9 - 34." The photo back has a stamped "ROGER HURLBENT COLLECTION." The signed photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA for the Bela Lugosi signature (AO02985).
