The late Kobe Bryant announced to the world and the NBA that the era of Kobe had begun when the young rookie won the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest during the NBA's All-Star Weekend on February 9, 1997. Thousands of spectators at the Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, witnessed the rookie, selected 13th overall in the 1996 NBA Draft straight out of Lower Merion High School located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, post a score of 49 to defeat Chris Carr and Michael Finley for the coveted title of Slam Dunk champion. The performance acted as a herald of things to come, with the late Bryant winning 5 NBA titles and 18 consecutive All-Star selections while capturing two Finals MVP Awards on top of being named the 2008 NBA MVP. Bryant, who won the Slam Dunk title just like his inspiration, Michael Jordan, was also a two-time NBA scoring champ. He was selected to 9 NBA All-Defensive Teams, inviting comparisons to Jordan that will last a lifetime.
