One-page handwritten letter, dated June 30, 1884, signed in black fountain pen by Morgan Bulkeley (1837-1922), first President of the National League. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the letter and graded the signature NM-MT 8. In his letter, written in his capacity as mayor of Hartford, Connecticut (on "Mayor's Office" official letterhead), Bulkeley writes to the "Hon. Samuel Fessender" and recommends a friend of his for employment in a municipal office. Bulkeley was unanimously elected as the first president of the National League in 1876. Prior to that, he had been president of the Hartford Dark Blues of the National Association. Bulkeley made a great contribution to the game during the National League's inaugural season by reducing gambling and drinking. However, after just one season he left baseball to pursue his interests in business, as president of the Aetna Insurance Company, and politics, serving two terms as Mayor of Hartford, four years as Governor of Connecticut (1889-1893), and six years as Senator (1905-1911). Despite his brief tenure as president of the National League, Bulkeley was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937. Because Bulkeley passed away fifteen years prior to his Hall of Fame induction, his signature is scarce in any form. In Very Good condition overall.
