Rare James Jim Toomey Single Signed NL Baseball St. Louis Cardinals GM With Full Letter JSA COA.
Toomey, a former assistant general manager and public relations director for the team, died Sunday, eight months after being diagnosed with the disease.
He started his career as a sportswriter with the old St. Louis Star-Times in 1937 and spent 38 years in the Cardinals' front office before retiring in 1987. He stayed on as a team consultant until 1994 and served as an official scorer through 2000.
Following Toomey's retirement, the Cardinals renamed the Busch Stadium press box in his honor.
Toomey won the 1987 Robert O. Fishel Award for public relations excellence. The award, voted on by public relations directors, is given to baseball representatives in recognition of their ethics, character, dedication, service, professionalism and humanitarianism.
