Presented is a game-used Louisville Slugger Hillerich & Bradsby O16 professional model baseball bat used by former single-season American League home run king Roger Maris during the 1967 MLB season. The 1967 campaign was Maris' first with the St. Louis Cardinals after a torrid seven-year tenure in the Bronx that saw him win two AL MVP Awards and club 203 home runs, including a then-record 61 long-balls in 1961. In 1967, Maris hit .261 with nine homers and 55 RBIs while recording a .751 OPS. His Cardinals were dominant, finishing the regular season with 101 wins before besting the Red Sox in a seven-game classic in the World Series. Although Maris had a relatively quiet regular season, he was wonderful in the Fall Classic, batting .385 (second only to Lou Brock for the Red Birds) with seven RBI; this was the best batting average he had posted in any of his seven World Series. The offered ash bat weighs 33.4 ounces and measures 35.0 inches. According to the piece's accompanying PSA/DNA LOA (1B07755), the item exhibits evidence of "moderate use" with a handle crack, grain swelling on the back barrel, and ball marks, stitch impressions, and cleat impressions on the barrel. A light coat of pine tar is visible on the handle. The model number, length, and weight specifications have been confirmed by the manufacturer’s ordering records as being requisitioned by Maris sometime in 1967, the year Maris' Cardinals beat Boston in the World Series. The PSA/DNA LOA concludes that the bat was used by Maris during the referenced labeling period (1967).
