1975-76 Boston Celtics Team Signed Game Used Basketball with Exceptional Provenance!
The 1975-76 Boston Celtics finished the regular season with a 54-28 record and won their thirteenth NBA Championship by defeating the Phoenix Suns in six games. Most notably, Game Five of this Finals series went into triple-overtime at the Boston Garden and is widely considered by basketball historians as the "greatest game ever played"
Offered is an Wilson Official NBA Walter Kennedy game used basketball signed by thirteen 1975-76 NBA Champion Boston Celtics, including Hall of Famers Auerbach (president and GM), Cowens, Havlicek, White and Nelson. Others include Silas, Scott, Stacom, McDonald, Kuberski, Boswell, Ard and Challant (trainer). The ball exhibits evidence of game use, the stamping remains bold and the vintage black marker autographs grade an overall 9/10 in strength.
Aside from the extreme scarcity of vintage signed game used basketballs from the 1970's, what makes this offering all the more special is it's incredible provenance from our consignor who has treasured this prize for half a century. His of letter of provenance reads:
"My father was a general contractor who got a job remodeling some of the offices in the old Boston Garden in the summer of 1976. His point of contact was a friend of his, Paul Mooney, who was the president of the Boston Garden and the Boston Bruins. Mr. Mooney found out from my dad that I was a huge Boston Celtics fan. One day, Mr. Mooney asked me to follow him to meet someone in the Garden. He took me to Red Auerbach's office and introduced me to Red as the #1 fan of the Celtics. Red gave me a tour of the locker room and training areas. I sat in Dave Cowens' locker and even tried on one of his shoes, right over my own shoe. I was really living the dream. Red said, "I got something for you in my office". We went to his office and sitting next to his desk was a rolling rack of 8-10 basketballs. Red grabbed one of the balls, passed it to me and said to take care of it because it was a game used ball signed by the championship team. I thought I was going to pass out. I have had the ball in my possession since 1976. I kept it in a pillowcase and it hardly ever saw the light of day."
