As the Cardinals converged for Spring Training in preparation for the 1930 season, there arrived a swaggering greenhorn named Dean. Despite all his bravado and tales of derring-do, this raw kid from the Ozarks was clearly in need of additional grooming if he ever hoped to persevere in the Bigs. He pitched, and he did his jumpin’ jacks, and then he returned whence he came – to Houston of the Texas League. Among several, one of Dean’s shortcomings was the need for a real power-punch nickname…like "Dizzy" for example. (After all, "Jerome," or "Jay Hanna," or "Herman" doesn’t exactly impart the fear of hell on opposing batsmen.) In the course of all those calisthenics, many of the Cardinals…who would go on to win the 1930 pennant…paused to ink their identities on this ball. It’s an Official National League (Heydler), and it holds 20 St. Louis Cardinals autographs. All of these signatures are clean and legible to detail: Earl [Sparky] Adams, Hi Bell, Ray Blades, Jim Bottomley (HOF), Max Carey (HOF),  [Taylor] Douthit, Frank Frisch (clubhouse), Chick Hafey (HOF), Herman Dizzy Dean (HOF), Hal Haid (sweet spot), Bill Hallahan, Andy High, Jim Lindsay, Gus Mancuso, Ernie Orsatti, George Puccinelli, Flint Rhem, Mike Ryba, Gabby Street, and Watty [George] Watkins. Dizzy Dean, of course, had a distinguished presence with Cardinal teams later in the decade. In the shorter term, though, he actually made a cameo appearance with the parent club in the last week of the 1930 season, but he was shipped back to the minors where he spent the entire ’31 season. By default, we’re able to isolate this ball’s signing to 1930 Spring Training; it’s the only window of time that Dean and Hal Haid were teammates - so to speak. Haid exited on waivers on September 18th, and Diz was promoted to the Cardinals ten days later. Quite obviously, then, this Dizzy Dean autograph is certainly among his earliest (if not the earliest) known in his professional career. The only known Dizzy "Herman" Dean signature on a baseball. Great ball from the 1930 National League Champions Cardinals Team. Full LOA from PSA DNA.
