Before the 1969 season began, the New York Mets had never finished higher than ninth place in the National League and never had a winning season when they entered as an expansion team in 1962. However, with the new Eastern and Western Division format, the Mets were placed in the Eastern Division and battled the Chicago Cubs for most of the year, and featured young stars like Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan. Despite the upsurge in talent and results, the Mets were still 10 games out of first place on August 10th, trailing the Cubs. From that point, they would win 38 of their remaining 49 games to steamroll past the Cubs, finish the regular season with a 100-62 record and won the franchise’s first ever World Series victory with an upset win over the Baltimore Orioles. This 19.5-by-20.5-inch commemorative 1969 World Champion New York Mets home plate is signed by 19 members of the team with a black marker. Key signatures on the plate include those of Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Donn Clendenon, Cleon Jones, Ed Kranepool, and Joe Pignatano. The ball comes with an LOA from JSA (X90272) for the signature.
